The ONE Thing To Avoid In Office Cleaning
As an office cleaning trainer and supervisor, I always tell the people who make their first steps in the business never to forget that they chase two goals. Goal number one is to make their customer happy – that would be the company or office manager that hires them. Goal number two is arguably even more important – to avoid any conflict with office workers at all costs.
Very few people go into office cleaning as their first job in the industry. Most technicians have some background in carpet, window or, most often – home cleaning. While this allows them to gather valuable experience and hone their skills, it also has one significant disadvantage. In the field of home cleaning, customers delegate all their chores and only care about the final results, paying no attention to the process whatsoever. Such an approach does not work in office cleaning.
The most common problem that corporate cleaning contractors face arises from single working station treatment – the well-known desk organising. What most office cleaners simply cannot understand is that some office workers do not want to have their desks organised, especially by someone who does not know what they do. The problem is particularly acute in the IT and high-tech corporate fields.
So how do you avoid the issue? As a cleaner, you have to be flexible and communicative. The office manager might have told you to clean all desks thoroughly, but ask each person about their preferences if possible. Do not under any circumstances throw away any sheets of paper, even if they look unintelligible and unimportant. It is not your job to determine what is important and what goes to the waste bin.
Does it sound like too much of a hassle? Guess what – it is! But if you want to be a successful office cleaner, it is high time you realised you are in the pro league now!
